Section R908.3 is titled 'Roof replacement' and covers requirements for reroofing. Removal of the existing roof covering and underlayment to the roof deck for roof replacement is established. The purpose of this section is to protect the structure from weather and prevent roof coverings from detaching from the roof assembly. This section has an exception which allows for an existing adhered ice barrier to remain in place and be recovered with a new ice barrier. The purpose of this exception is to prevent damage to the existing roof deck.

The model shows an existing roof covering and underlayment being removed, (but leaving the existing ice barrier in place), and installation of a new underlayment, (including a new ice barrier), and roof covering.
