R902.1

Section R902.1 is titled 'Roof covering materials' and covers the requirements for allowed types of roof coverings and fire ratings of roof covering materials. A cross-reference to 2 sections in this code which cover roof coverings, fire classification based on jurisdictional law and distance from a lot line, and standards by which fire classification testing must be done in accordance with is established. The purpose of this section is to slow the spread of fire. This section has 4 exceptions which exempt the requirement for testing in accordance with a standard. The purpose of the exceptions is to clarify that testing on roof covering materials which are non-combustible, such as masonry, stone, and metal is not required.
