R802.3

Section R802.3 is titled 'Ridge' and covers the requirements for roof-ceiling ridge construction. The minimum thickness and depth of a ridge board, and the requirement for a ridge beam supported by the structure, where the roof assembly does not provide structural ties across the building is established. Note that the section intends to allow for structural members other than walls and girders, such as posts or columns, to support the ridge beam.

The model shows 2 partial gable roof-ceiling assemblies with the ridge and support posts highlighted. The 1st shows an assembly with ceiling joists acting as ties using a ridge board. The 2nd shows an assembly without ceiling joists (commonly referred to as a cathedral ceiling), using a ridge beam which is supported by posts which bear on the foundation.
