R703.8.4.1

Section R703.8.4.1 is titled 'Size and spacing' and covers requirements for wall coverings. The requirement for exterior masonry veneer to be attached to the structure with ties of certain types and minimum size, for ties to support a maximum area of veneer, and to have a maximum spacing both horizontally and vertically is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent detachment from the structure. This section has an exception which reduces the area of veneer a tie is permitted to support in certain seismic zones, dependent on type of structure, or in certain wind zones. The purpose of this exception is to prevent detachment from the structure where there is an increased risk of detachment.
