Section R702.6.1 is titled 'Attachment' and covers requirements for wall coverings. The allowance for certain fasteners to attach wood shakes and shingles to interior walls, and for attachment of wood shakes and shingles directly to the substrate, as well as for a minimum amount of certain types of fasteners in each piece to be covered by the course above is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent detachment from the structure.

The model shows a section of wood shingles being attached with two nails per shingle. A nail was overdriven on one shingle which caused it to split.
