R701.2

Section R701.2 is titled 'Installation' and covers the requirements for protecting wall coverings from precipitation where such wall coverings are not designed to be exposed to precipitation. Weather protection being in place before installation of coverings not designed to be exposed to precipitation and drying of exterior sheathing before being covered is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure, mold development, and premature degradation of wall coverings.

The model shows a dwelling being built in the proper order. After framing, the exterior sheathing is installed, then (after assuring the exterior sheathing is dry) the water resistive barrier is installed, then the windows, (doors are on back order, so sheets of plywood are being used to protect the door openings), then the roof, and lastly the interior gypsum board. It is also common for window openings to be covered with temporary means, like sheathing or plastic, to allow for the interior gypsum board to be installed prior to the installation of the windows (not shown in this model). Note, the water resistive barrier will need to be covered with the permanent exterior wall covering within a timeframe required by the manufacturer (not shown in this model).
