R608.5.1.3

Section R608.5.1.3 is titled 'Maximum aggregate size' and covers the requirements for aggregate used in concrete for concrete walls. The maximum size aggregate based on dimensions between forms, between reinforcing bars, and between reinforcing bars and forms is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure. This section has an exception which allows for larger size aggregate where removable forms are used, and the concrete can be placed properly without voids. The purpose of this exception is to allow for methods which are reliable in placing the concrete, and will be able to be visually inspected after removal of the forms, to assure exterior surface voids were not created (which is most likely where voids would happen).

The model shows two forms sections facing each other, a piece of vertical reinforcing bar, and a piece of aggregate which does not exceed 1/5 the dimension between the forms, or 3/4 the dimension between the reinforcing bar and the form.
