R606.6.4.2.1

Section R606.6.4.2.1 is titled 'Roof structures' and covers requirements for wall construction. Where being installed for vertical lateral support, the requirement for masonry walls to be anchored to the roof structure with metal straps in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, 1/2" bolts spaced by a maximum distance, embedded a minimum distance into the masonry or tied to bond beam reinforcement not less than 6 inches from the top of the wall, or by other approved anchors is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows a section of a masonry wall being supported by a roof structure anchored to the wall with a 1/2" J-bolt embedded 16" into grout (which is translucent for demonstration).
