Section R606.5.2 is titled 'Corbel projection' and covers the requirements for cantilevering of masonry units. The maximum dimension a masonry unit may project beyond the course below dependent on the direction of the projection, and total corbel dimension for a wall dependent on the number of wythes and type of bonding is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows a partial course of brick veneer with one brick on the next course projecting from the face one-half the height of the unit, and the other brick projecting at a right angle one-third the thickness of the unit.
