Section R606.3.2 is titled 'Masonry unit placement' and covers the requirements for the setting of masonry wall units into mortar. The state of the mortar, the extrusion of mortar from the joints during placement of the masonry unit, bed joint control, and method for dealing with units disturbed after placement is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows a hollow cement block being placed in mortar, compressing and extruding the mortar to assure a solid bond is being made between the blocks and the mortar (both above and below the mortar bed).
