R606.12.3.2.1

Section R606.12.3.2.1 is titled 'Shear wall reinforcement requirements' and covers requirements for wall construction. The requirement for masonry shear walls to have reinforcement with a maximum spacing, dependent on length and height of the wall, for the cross-sectional area of vertical reinforcement to be a minimum percent of the required shear reinforcement, and for shear reinforcement to be attached to vertical reinforcement bars in a certain manner is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows two x-rayed masonry shear walls with the shorter length wall having closer reinforcement spacing compared to the longer wall.
