R606.12.2.3.1

Section R606.12.2.3.1 is titled 'Connections to masonry shear walls' and covers requirements for wall construction. The requirement for connectors of a minimum strength and maximum spacing to be designed to transfer horizontal and vertical loads between shear walls and horizontal elements, and disallowance for the connectors to be used in such a way which would allow for tension stresses perpendicular to the grain of ledgers or nailers is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows a shear wall section with a floor ledger attached to it using bolts grouted into cells, and floor movement which creates a stress in the ledger perpendicular to the grain, causing it to crack, which is not allowed per this section.
