R602.6.1

Section R602.6.1 is titled 'Drilling and notching of top plate' and covers requirements for wall construction. The requirement to install a galvanized metal tie of a minimum size with specific fasteners across the top plate of a wood-frame load-bearing wall where the plate is drilled or notched more than 50% in accordance with a figure in this code is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure. This section has an exception which exempts the metal tie where the wall is covered by a wood structural panel. The purpose for this exception is to clarify that a wood structural panel will perform equivalently or better than the metal tie, rendering the metal tie redundant and unnecessary.
