R602.3.3

Section R602.3.3 is titled 'Bearing studs' and covers the requirement for floor or roofing framing members' location relative to their supporting studs. The maximum offset dimension for floor or roof framing members relative to their supporting studs, where the framing members and studs exceed a minimum spacing dimension is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent overstressing of the top plate which could lead to structural failure. This section has 3 exceptions which allow for the elimination of the maximum offset dimension where additional framing is installed to reinforce the top plate. The purpose of these exceptions is to allow for practical alternatives which afford the top plate adequate strength.

The model shows 4 partial wall and floor sections. The 1st shows a 2x4 wall with studs and floor framing spaced 24" o.c., and the floor joists are offset no more than 5" from the studs below, which complies with the standard language of this section. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th represent the 3 exceptions, with the floor joists offset greater than 5" from the studs below, with additional framing, which is highlighted, added in accordance with each exception.
