R602.12.7

Section R602.12.7 is titled 'Lateral support' and covers requirements for wall construction. Using the simplified bracing method, the requirement to provide lateral support at braced wall panels, in accordance with another section of this code, where the vertical dimension from the top outside of the panel to the roof sheathing above exceeds a certain value is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure, and offer a simpler method for the design and construction of wall bracing for buildings that meet specific criteria.

The model shows the top plate of two braced wall panels below rafters of the same size, but different slope, making the 1st one less than 9-1/4" to the sheathing, and the 2nd one more than 9-1/4" to the sheathing. (Sheathing not shown for clarity).
