Section R601.2.1 is titled 'Compressible floor-covering materials' and covers the requirements for wall placement on top of compressible floor coverings. The maximum dimension of compression, based on several factors, in order for compressible floor covering to be allowed between the floor and the wall is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows a wall built on top of compressible floor covering which exceeds the amount of compression allowed by this section. Such movement would also affect the framing bearing on top of the wall, be it a floor, ceiling, or roof (not shown in this model).
