R507.8

Section R507.8 is titled 'Vertical and lateral supports' and covers the requirements for deck structural stability. Construction methods and connections which prevent structural failure from vertical and lateral loads and the ability to be able to verify these methods and connections to the primary structure during inspection is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows 2 sections of decks which do not conform to this section of the code. The 1st shows a deck which has been attached to the primary structure using nails which are subject to withdrawal, allowing the deck to pull away from the house and fall. The 2nd shows a deck with a cantilever which has not been properly fastened to the joist hangers, allowing the deck to rotate at its bearing point on the beam when a heavy load is applied near the cantilevered edge of the deck. How will these connections be inspected when there is inadequate room to fit under the deck⸮
