R502.9

Section R502.9 is titled 'Fastening' and covers the requirements for fastening floor framing. A cross-reference to a table in this code which provides data for fastening of framing members, and clarification that floors cannot rely solely on gravity or friction to remain in place is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows a section of a floor joist being toenailed to a top plate with 3 - 10d common nails. The toenailing entry point and angle were done in accordance with the American Wood Council's Toenail Connections Design Aid No.2. Notice that if this plate was on concrete, that the 3" nails would not be able to be driven all the way in (using this angle and entry point). The cross-referenced fastening schedule table provides for several different types and lengths of fasteners for this connection.
