R502.8.1

Section R502.8.1 is titled 'Sawn lumber' and covers the requirements for cuts, notches, and bore holes in wood lumber joists, rafters, and beams. The size and location of notches and holes in joists, rafters, and beams is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows a 2x8 joist and 4x14 beam with notches and holes sized and located within the allowed parameters of this section. The areas where notches are not allowed are highlighted. Notice in the 2x8 that the maximum allowed size bore hole must be horizontally offset from a maximum allowed size notch, in order to maintain 2" from both the notch and the edge of the joist.
