R502.3.1

Section R502.3.1 is titled 'Sleeping areas and attic joists' and covers requirements for floor construction. The requirement to use a table in this chapter to determine the maximum allowable spans for floor joists supporting sleeping rooms and attics accessed by a fixed stairway, provided certain parameters are not exceeded, and to use another section of this code for determining the allowable spans of ceiling joists that support attics used for limited or no storage is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.
