R502.1.1.2

Section R502.1.1.2 is titled 'End-jointed lumber' and covers the requirements for the use of end-jointed lumber. The allowance for end-jointed lumber to be used with solid lumber of the same species and grade provided it is identified in accordance with another section of this code, and the requirement for an additional specific marking when used in a fire-resistance rated assembly is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure and premature failure when exposed to fire conditions.

The model shows a section of a piece of end-jointed lumber which is being separated to show a common type of joint used in end-jointed lumber. Of course in reality this joint cannot easily be taken apart, but if it was for some reason, it cannot be reglued in the field.
