R404.1.3.3.7.5

Section R404.1.3.3.7.5 is titled 'Lap splices' and covers the requirements for breaks in reinforcement bars in foundation walls. The requirement to use the longest practical lengths of reinforcing bars, and a cross-reference to another table and figure, which provide minimum splice overlap and maximum spacing between spliced bars, is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows 6 sets of reinforcing bars with splices plus a translucent overlay between spliced bars to help visually compare the different dimensions required for different sets of bars. The 6 sets represent the 6 data points in table R608.5.4(1) of the top row (lap splice length-tension), bar sizes in the same order top to bottom as column 2, the left group being the 40K yield strength column, and the right group being the 60K yield strength column.
