R404.1.3.3.7.3

Section R404.1.3.3.7.3 is titled 'Wall openings' and covers the requirements for vertical reinforcement bars which are interrupted by openings in a concrete foundation wall. The size, location, and amount of additional reinforcement bars to be added, where openings in the wall interrupt the spacing required by section R404.1.3.2 is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure.

The model shows an x-rayed section of a foundation wall with vertical reinforcing bars spaced on center, two of which end up falling in openings in the wall. These bars are replaced with additional bars within 12 inches of both sides of each opening. (Of course this would be done before the placement of the concrete.)
