R403.1.8

Section R403.1.8 is titled 'Foundations on expansive soils' and covers requirements for footing construction. The requirement to design foundations and slabs for buildings which are built on expansive soils in accordance with another code is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure. This section has an exception which allows the building official to approve such design without the use of a different code where there is knowledge that such construction will perform adequately. The purpose of this exception is to allow for designs which have empirical data to support their adequacy.
