Chapter 4 Overview

Chapter 4 is titled 'Foundations' and covers foundation design and construction. Elements such as soils and engineered fill, bearing details, frost protection, termite protection, materials, configurations, storm water management, seismic areas, flood hazard areas, and order of operations are controlled by this chapter.

This model shows a partial cutaway view of a cast-in-place concrete foundation with a spread footing, which is topped with a wood sill plate secured to the wall with anchor bolts, nuts and washers, drainage system, dampproofing, insulation, and backfill. Insulation of foundations is not covered in this chapter, but should be inspected at the same time as the drainage system and dampproofing/waterproofing before the backfill is placed against the wall.
