Chapter 39 Overview

Chapter 39 is titled 'Power and Lighting Distribution' and covers the requirements for various elements and features of an electrical system such as outlet locations, circuit protection, and general installation applicable to all wiring methods. The purpose of this chapter is to prevent explosions, fires, electrical shocks and burns, electrocution, occupant's traversal through the dark, and/or premature degradation of materials. For example, by requiring receptacles spaced with regular frequency, occupants will be less likely to use extension cords for permanent wiring which is a common cause of fires, because they become damaged from being stepped on, placed under furniture, bent around tight corners, etc.

The model shows a section of wiring distribution being run from a receptacle outlet to a lighting outlet.
