R314.4

Section R314.4 is titled 'Interconnection' and covers requirements for devices which detect and warn of smoke accumulation. The requirement for smoke alarms within a dwelling unit to be interconnected, either physically or wirelessly, so any one alarm activation actuates the other alarms is established. The purpose of this section is to quickly alert all occupants throughout a dwelling of excessive smoke accumulation somewhere within the dwelling to afford them time to exit and call for help before being overcome by smoke.

The model shows 2 smoke alarms with a diagrammatic connection and a demonstration of the activation of one alarm actuating the other.
