R313 Overview

Section R313 is titled 'Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems' and covers the requirements for providing a water-based fire suppression system in dwelling units. Townhouses and one- & two-family dwellings are covered in separate subsections. The purpose of this section is to slow the spread of fire.

The model shows a sprinkler head which gets connected to a water supply and will open when exposed to high heat, allowing water to spray around the area and quell a fire.
