Section R312.2.1 is titled 'Windows sills' and covers the requirements for providing window fall protection. Dimension thresholds for when protection is required and allowable protection methods are established. The purpose of this section is to reduce fall hazards.

The model shows three windows, each with one of the three allowable methods for providing fall protection. (The elevations for requiring fall protection are omitted from this model to give focus to the protection methods). The first window is of such dimensions that a specialized device is not required. The second window has a fall protection device which complies with the referenced ASTM standard. The third window has an opening control device that complies with the referenced ASTM standard. Each window shows that a 4" diameter sphere will not pass with the window in its largest opened position. The ASTM standard provides many other technical details for window fall protection and opening control devices. The installation instructions for such devices must also be followed to be compliant.
