R311.8.1

Section R311.8.1 is titled 'Maximum slope' and covers requirements for ramps. The maximum slope on ramps serving exit doors and ramps serving other doors is established. The purpose of this section is to mandate that when ramps are installed that they are constructed to reduce the risk of trip, fall, entanglement, and bump hazards as well as to provide an efficient pathway between different levels. This section has an exception which allows for ramps serving exit doors to have an increased maximum slope where the site makes it technically infeasible to meet the required maximum slope. The purpose of this exception is to allow for ramps of an increased acceptable slope where site conditions would otherwise not allow for their installation.

The model shows a ramp with the sloped sections highlighted. If the door was an egress door, this ramp would not be allowed, unless otherwise determined that the shallower slope was technically infeasible to construct due to site conditions.
