R311.8

Section R311.8 is titled 'Ramps' and, while there is no language directly under this section, it intends to cross-reference all of its subsections, which establish maximum slope (with an exception), landing location and dimension, and handrail details. The details for handrail height, grip size, continuity, and projection mimic sections R311.7.8.2 through R311.7.8.5. The purpose of this section is to require ramps that reduce the risk of trip, fall, entanglement, and bump hazards as well as to provide an efficient pathway between different levels.

The model shows a ramp which changes direction and has a different slope at each section, which are labeled. The mid-landing is perpendicular to the slope of ramps in two directions, and has the minimum width for each. The top and bottom landings only need to meet the width dimension in one direction. The top section slope is steeper than 1 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal and requires the handrail. If the ramp is presumed to be leading to the egress door required by section R311.2, then it would be not compliant with R311.8.1 (unless it was determined to be technically infeasible per the exception, then it would be compliant.) If the door is not the required egress door, then it is compliant without the exception. (Handrail details are being presumed to be compliant with their related subsections).
