R311.7.8.4

Section R311.7.8.4 is titled 'Continuity' and covers the requirements for the installation of a stairway handrail in such a manner that a user does not need to entirely remove their grip and regrab the handrail mid-flight. The purpose of this section is to reduce trip and fall hazards. The section has 2 exceptions which allow for an interruption in the handrail under certain circumstances. The purpose of these exceptions is to allow for practical installation methods, and are not considered to diminish the level of trip and fall protection required by the section.

The model shows a stairway with one flight with a handrail installed. The top portion of the handrail conforms to the section with a return to the wall above the top riser; the middle portion conforms to the first exception with an interruption by a newel post at the turn in the winders; and the bottom portion conforms to the second exception with a starting easing installed over the lowest tread.
