R311.7.8.2

Section R311.7.8.2 is titled 'Handrail projection' and covers the requirements for handrails protruding over stairways with a maximum measurement being established. The purpose of this section is to reduce trip/slip and fall hazards associated with handrails which are protruding from a wall, partition, or barrier. It is not the intent of this section to prevent center handrails on wide stairways. This section has an exception which allows for an increase in the maximum measurement. The purpose of this exception is to practically accommodate a possible arrangement of adjacent, overlapping landings, floors, or flights of stairways.

The model shows a partial stairway with a handrail. The maximum projection allowed by this section is denoted on the first part of the handrail, and the exception allowed increase is denoted where it offsets away from the switchback flight having a tread that protrudes into the lower flight's handrail path which would interfere with the handrail clearance required by section R311.7.8.3.
