R311.7.6

Section R311.7.6 is titled 'Landings for stairways' and covers the requirements for a flat, traversable area of minimum size at the top and bottom of stairways. Minimum width, non-square and non-rectangular shaped minimum area and walkline dimension, and straight run minimum depth are established. The purpose of this section is to reduce trip and fall hazards as well as to provide an efficient route through a dwelling. This section has an exception which allows for no floor or landing at the top of interior stairways, where a door does not swing over the stairs. The purpose of this exception is to allow for practical space saving design and construction, as this configuration is considered of lower trip and fall risk and does not diminish an efficient route.

The model shows 4 partial stairways, with red Xs denoting non-compliance. The first (left) shows a landing that is not the entire width of the stairway, making this design not compliant with this section. The second shows a non-square/rectangular shaped landing with an area and walkline measurement of a quarter circle with a radius equal to the width of the stairway, making this design compliant with this section. (Highlighted on each landing is the area below the projecting tread nosing which does not contribute to the landing area or depth measurements). The third shows a non-square/rectangular shaped landing with an area and walkline measurement of less than a quarter circle (with a radius equal to the width of the stairway), making this design not compliant with this section. The fourth demonstrates the exception to this section, showing an interior stairway without a landing at the top and a door swinging over the stairs, making this design not compliant with this section. (Note that where a door intervenes between an interior flight of stairs and the landing or floor above, that the flight is considered to not have a landing or floor above). (Also note the model rounds up the circular walkline measurement; the hypotenuse of a right triangle with 12" legs is actually about 16.97").
