R311.7.2

Section R311.7.2 is titled 'Headroom' and covers the requirements for clear ceiling height above stairways. The purpose of this section is to reduce the risk of bump hazards and provide for an efficient pathway between different levels. This section has 2 exceptions. The first exception allows for stairways to be slightly wider than the floor opening. The purpose of this exception is to allow for a common design where the stairs are wider at the bottom for aesthetics and/or convenience. The second exception clarifies that this section is not intended to apply to spiral stairways.

The model shows a stairway with the minimum headroom dimension highlighted as well as the projection beyond the floor opening allowed by the first exception.
