R311.2

Section R311.2 is titled 'Egress door' and covers the requirements for providing an opening in the dwelling. The purpose of this section is to require a part of the egress system which is convenient and efficient for exiting by occupants and entry by first responders with rescue equipment, in the event of an emergency. The section requires that the door be side hinged, a minimum clear width and height is achieved, and that it must be openable from the inside without the need for a key or other special knowledge or effort.

The model shows an egress door which meets the minimum width and height, and has a simple turn lock built into the door handle, making it compliant with this section. Notice the width measurement is at a slight angle from the face of the door to the stop.
