R310.6

Section R310.6 is titled 'Alterations or repairs of existing basements' and covers requirements for providing secondary exiting. A clarification that existing basements being altered or repaired not needing to have an emergency escape and rescue opening installed is established. The purpose of this section is to clarify that existing basements can be remodeled without having to add an emergency escape and rescue opening. This section has an exception which requires a remodeled basement which adds a previously non-existing sleeping room to install an emergency escape and rescue opening in the sleeping room. The purpose of this exception is to require an emergency escape and rescue opening in new sleeping rooms created in existing basements.

The model shows the skin of an existing dwelling with highlighted emergency escape and rescue opening locations, which is having the basement remodeled including a new sleeping room being added. The new sleeping room and emergency escape and rescue opening location also becomes highlighted.
