Section R310.4 is titled 'Bars, grilles, covers and screens' and covers the requirements for devices placed over emergency escape and rescue openings and wells. The size of the device, ability to open it without keys, tools, or special knowledge, and a maximum opening force is established. The purpose of this section is to assure secondary means of exiting with protective devices are readily usable.
