R309.2

Section R309.2 is titled 'Carports' and covers the requirements for carport construction. The number of sides that must be open to be considered a carport instead of a garage, the floor surface material, and the floor being sloped to facilitate drainage is established. The purpose of this section is to slow the spread of fire and prevent water damage to the dwelling. This section has an exception which allows asphalt to be used for the floor surface. The purpose of this exception is to clarify that asphalt is allowed, which is porous and would allow water to soak through it, instead of facilitating water towards the main vehicle entry doorway.
