Section R309.1 is titled 'Floor surface' and covers the requirements for garage floors. Non-combustibility of the floor and liquid drainage facilitation toward a drain or the main vehicle door is established. The purpose of this section is for general well-being, to prevent structural water damage, and to reduce the potential of flammable liquids pooling within the garage.

The model shows a garage floor made of concrete, the vehicle and pedestrian doors, and a liquid source draining towards the vehicle door. Some garages are built with multiple vehicle doors (not shown in this model); the 'main' vehicle door would need to be designated in such an arrangement.
