R308.4.3

Section R308.4.3 is titled 'Glazing in windows' and covers the requirements for determining when glazing in windows is a hazardous location. The size, distance of the bottom and top edge from the floor, and horizontal distance from a walking surface which must all be a certain dimension to consider a window a hazardous location is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent severe injury from impact with windows of certain size and placement. This section has 3 exceptions which exempt windows of such dimensions from being considered a hazardous location. The purpose of these exceptions is to allow for certain windows or arrangements to not be considered a hazardous location because there is a lower risk of severe injury.

The model shows 4 windows which meet the 4 list item dimensions. The left front window is considered to be in a hazardous location. The window in the right wall is decorative and exempt from being considered a hazardous location per exception #1. The right front window is protected by a horizontal rail that meets all the requirements of exception #2 and does not need to be considered a hazardous location. The window in the left wall has the outboard pane at least 25 feet above exterior grade, and does not need to be considered a hazardous location per exception #3 (though the inboard pane is still considered a hazardous location and does require safety glazing.)
