R308.3.1

Section R308.3.1 is titled 'Impact test' and covers the requirements for testing glazing which will be installed in hazardous locations in accordance with a specific standard. The standard by which glazing must be tested, and the required categorization of testing, via cross-reference to a table in this code is established. The purpose of this section is to specify the standard by which glazing in hazardous areas must be tested and the category of such test. This section has an exception which allows for testing by another standard for glazing which does not fall within a list of certain uses and locations. The purpose of the exception is to help maintain consistency between glazing uses and the standards, in that, CPSC 16 CFR 1201 specifies that it is only intended to cover certain uses of glazing. It would be confusing and possibly contradictory for the code to require glazing to conform to a standard that the standard itself is not intended to regulate. In fact, CPSC 16 CFR 1201 actually references ANSI Z97.1 as the means by which testing is done. But CPSC 16 CFR 1201 covers a wider spectrum of issues with glazing, such as injury data, economic impact, and prohibition of stockpiling, whereas ANSI Z97.1 is more narrowly focused on technical testing of glazing.

The model shows examples of different types of glazing categories used in the cross-referenced table (of which some fall under more than one category), and a shelf full of referenced standards.
