R308.1

Section R308.1 is titled 'Identification' and covers the requirements for labeling glazing in hazardous locations, except for multipane assemblies having individual panes not exceeding 1 sq.ft. in exposed area, which is covered separately under a subsection. The requirement for labeling information and the manner of application of the label is established. The purpose of this section is to allow for easy and permanent identification of safety glazing, as well as to prevent a manufacturer's designation from being removed and transferred to non-safety glazing. This section has 2 exceptions which allows for alternative labeling methods for safety glazing other than tempered glass and tempered spandrel glass. The purpose of these exceptions is to allow for practical methods of identifying other types of glazing, which cannot be marked and/or seen with such methods as acid etching, due to the physical properties of the material, or the manufacturing process, such as opaque glazing (which is not common in one- & two-family construction).

The model shows 3 pieces of glazing manufactured for use in hazardous locations (the labeling in the model is larger than actual real-world labels for the sake of clarity). The 1st piece of glazing is tempered glass with the label acid etched into the glass. The 2nd piece of glazing is laminated glass which is labeled with a paper label, as allowed per exception #1. The 3rd piece of glazing is spandrel glass which is opaque and has a removable paper label, as allowed per exception #2.
