R303.9

Section R303.9 is titled 'Required glazed openings' and covers the requirements for positioning openable glazing required by this code. The exterior side of required openable glazing being a street, public alley, or yard or court located on the same lot is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent natural light and ventilation from becoming obstructed. This section has 3 exceptions which clarify that certain specific elements and arrangements are also allowed. The purpose of the exceptions is to clarify that practical design is not intended to be disallowed by this section.

The model shows a section of a dwelling with openings in several locations which include the standard language and each exception allowed, as well as a highlighted opening which is not an allowed location for required glazing. The roofed porch is open for at least 65% on its long side and has a ceiling height of at least 7 feet; the roof eave overhang at the front right of the dwelling is not considered an obstruction; and the deck over the opening in the window well measures at least 3 feet from grade to the bottom of the beam.
