R303.5.1

Section R303.5.1 is titled 'Intake openings' and covers requirements for intake openings. The types of intake openings, minimum separation distance between intake openings and hazardous and noxious contaminant sources, and determination that certain specific sources are not considered hazardous or noxious is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent hazardous or noxious fumes from being drawn into the dwelling and subjecting the occupants to such fumes. This section has 3 exceptions which allow different separation dimensions. The purpose of these exceptions is to allow for other separation distances where there is low potential for fumes being drawn into the dwelling.

The model shows 4 partial sections of a dwelling with intake and hazardous or noxious exhaust openings. The 1st section shows the standard language separation requirements. The 2nd section shows exception #1. The 3rd section shows exception #2 which has many different possible variables which must be considered from Chapters 18 and 24, particularly, sections M1804.2.6 and G2427.8. The 4th section shows exception #3, which is a cross-reference to section M1502.3.
