R302.7

Section R302.7 is titled 'Under-stair protection' and covers the requirements for fire resistant construction in enclosed spaces under stairs which may be used for storage. The purpose of this section is to slow the spread of fire under stairs, allowing occupants and first responders additional time for escape and rescue by way of the stairs.

The model shows a stairway with the space below being converted from an unenclosed area to an enclosed one. The compliance indicator above the model shows where the stairs become non-compliant after being enclosed, then are brought back into compliance by the addition of gypsum board to the enclosed side. Inspectors should be sure they are checking that gypsum board was also installed on the enclosed side of the wall with the door. The translucent floor in the model makes it easy to see this.
