Section R302.4.1 is titled 'Through penetrations' and covers the requirements for through penetrations of fire-resistance rated assemblies. The requirement for through penetrations of fire-resistance rated assemblies to comply with one of two subsections is established. The purpose of this section is to slow the spread of fire, heat, and smoke through a fire-resistance-rated assembly. This section has 2 exceptions which allow for alternative through penetration construction for specific types of penetrations. The purpose of this exception is to allow for construction methods which are deemed to be adequate for slowing the spread of fire, heat, and smoke through the penetration of the fire-resistance rated assembly.
