Section R302.4 is titled 'Dwelling unit rated penetrations' and covers the requirements for maintaining the integrity of fire-resistance rated assemblies. The types of fire-resistance assemblies with penetrations, the types of dwellings, and a cross-reference to the method of protection is established. The technical details for protection are provided in the subsections of this section. The purpose of this section is to slow the spread of fire.

The model shows partial sections of a fire-resistance rated floor and wall assembly. Each assembly has both a through penetration and a membrane penetration. The penetrations in the model may or may not be compliant with this section and its subsections.
