Part VI, which contains chapter 24, is titled 'Fuel Gas' and covers fuel gas system requirements for natural gas, manufactured gas, liquified petroleum gas, or mixtures of these gases. Fuel gas systems serve a range of purposes, including but not necessarily limited to, space heating and cooling, cooking, clothes drying, water heating, physical therapy, and illumination. This Part provides requirements for the safe use of such gases to prevent explosion, fire, flame out, and inhalation hazards; both before and after combustion of the fuel gas. It also addresses structural stability and electrical safety as related to the use of fuel gas systems. Many fuel gas appliances require connection to mechanical systems which are addressed in Part V of the code.
The model shows a forced-air warm-air furnace supplied by natural gas, which is distributed using wrought iron pipe (referred to as 'black pipe').
