Section N1102.5 is titled 'Maximum fenestration U-factor and SHGC (Mandatory)' and covers requirements for energy efficiency. The maximum area-weighted average fenestration for U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient when using specific alternative compliance methods is established. The purpose of this section is to assure fenestration has a minimum level of energy efficiency.

The model shows a wall with two windows which change in thickness to symbolically represent an area-weighted average U-factor of the windows. (The thickness of a window frame, in and of itself, does not necessarily correlate to U-factor ratings). Where using tradeoff systems listed in this section, the area-weighted average U-factor and SHGC of the fenestration may not be greater than a specific listed value dependent on the climate zone and alternative method used.
